Marcus Dalgetty - Chief Flying Instructor

"When I started Paisley University to study Industrial Engineering I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career, however, I knew that choosing a science based subject would lead to a wide variety of options."

"On leaving university I began a career as a Commissioning Engineer and travelled around the world repairing machinery. Although this was a fantastic experience, I wanted to spend more time at home and decided that this would be the best time for a career change. I then took pilot lessons at a school in Northampton where I learned things like meteorology and radio navigation."

What does your working day look like?

On a typical working day he takes groups of Britons to his flight bases in the North of Scotland or the South of France where he teaches them how to fly various types of aircraft.

"My office is a 3D playground that and allows me to do things that I feel passionate about. Owning my own business allows me to have freedom and enjoy what I do. My engineering background also allows me to test and repair various aircraft."

What advice would you give to someone thinking of choosing a science course?

Choosing science as a subject gives anyone hoping to have a fun and successful career a solid platform and a range of opportunities that they wouldn't have thought possible. Movies portray those who study science as geeky but they couldn't be more wrong. Most of the people in practical and well paid jobs have come from a science background and are very successful.
